The Supplement Ratings

10 Best Magnesium Supplements (October 2026)

Magnesium is one of the most-searched supplements in the US, and one of the most confusing to buy: the same "400 mg" on two labels can mean very different amounts of actual magnesium depending on the form. This ranking looks past the marketing and scores each product on what the label actually discloses.

We analyzed every magnesium product in the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database and ranked them by dosage transparency, label completeness, formulation cleanliness and ingredient profile.

How we ranked them

Every product is scored 0–100 from its label data in the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database: dosage transparency (35 points — are amounts stated per ingredient, or hidden in a proprietary blend?), label completeness (25), formulation cleanliness (25 — fillers, dyes, titanium dioxide and other non-active ingredients) and ingredient profile (15). The Top 10 admits only products scoring 60 or higher; among those, products with a verified retail listing are shown first so the list is one you can act on. No brand can pay to be included or moved up.

Forms and dosage

Magnesium glycinate (bisglycinate)
Chelated to the amino acid glycine. Commonly chosen for evening use; gentler on the stomach than oxide.
Magnesium citrate
Well absorbed, inexpensive, has a mild laxative effect at higher doses.
Magnesium oxide
Highest elemental magnesium per pill but poorly absorbed; most of the dose passes through.
Magnesium malate, threonate, taurate
Specialty forms, usually at a premium price. Threonate is marketed for cognition; evidence is early.

How much to take

The RDA is 310–420 mg per day for adults, from food and supplements combined. The NIH tolerable upper limit for supplemental magnesium is 350 mg per day; higher doses mainly cause loose stools. Check whether the label lists elemental magnesium or the weight of the whole compound — "magnesium glycinate 1,000 mg" is typically about 140 mg of actual magnesium.

Who it's for

Adults whose diet is low in leafy greens, nuts, legumes and whole grains; people on proton-pump inhibitors or certain diuretics, which lower magnesium levels.

What to watch out for

Labels that list only the compound weight, "proprietary blends" that hide the amount per form, and products with titanium dioxide or artificial colors in the "other ingredients" line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which form of magnesium is best?

There is no single best form. Glycinate and citrate are well absorbed and widely available; oxide is cheap but poorly absorbed. Our ranking does not score the form itself — it scores how clearly the label states what you are getting.

Does "400 mg magnesium glycinate" mean 400 mg of magnesium?

Usually not. Glycinate is roughly 14% magnesium by weight, so 400 mg of the compound is about 56 mg of elemental magnesium. Well-labeled products state the elemental amount; that transparency is part of our score.

How are magnesium supplements ranked?

Products are ranked by SupplementScore, which evaluates label quality across four categories: dosage transparency (35 pts), label completeness (25 pts), formulation cleanliness (25 pts), and ingredient profile (15 pts). The score is based on data from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database, not marketing claims.

Does a higher score mean the supplement is more effective?

No. The SupplementScore measures label quality — how transparent, clean, and well-documented a product is. It does not measure clinical efficacy, bioavailability, or third-party testing. A higher score means better label practices, not guaranteed results.

How many magnesium supplements were analyzed?

We analyzed 2,436 magnesium products from the NIH DSLD database, which contains label data for over 116,000 dietary supplements sold in the United States.
